I was posting a Facebook status update in my kitchen while making dinner one recent night when it hit me: I am an internet addict. Not a cute little "Look at me, I'm such an addict!" addict, but a humongous, hand-over-your-life-over-so-I-can-stomp-on-it-with-my-stilettos addict. So I've decided to quit for a year. I don't know how long I'll last or even if I'll actually go through with it, but it's worth a try.
Offline, I'm a journalist and graduate student. My writing has appeared in newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, Newsweek, the Associated Press, The San Diego Union-Tribune and The Seattle Times. I am about to complete a PhD in comparative literature at Harvard.
Join me as I decide how and when to quit, read my dispatches form the dark side, send me canned soup and Lindt chocolates as I attempt to ply my trade with no cybertools, start a betting pool about when I'll cave, or just point and whisper. Because clearly you're fully in control of your internet habits. ;)
I'm offline. You're not. Here's how to reach me.
Until I go offline, email me at roxana dot popescu at gmail dot com.
After I log off, you can write a letter. I'll put the P.O. box number here before I disconnect.
You can also call my cell, if you have that number, or otherwise dial this public number: 773-ROXROXP (769-7697). Every call to that line will go into voicemail and, if you're not psycho, I will call you back.
Technically you could also email me when I'm offline. Then check compulsively to see if I wrote back. Addict.
